So, I get a phone call tonight, 10.30pm... My ma and dad have been evacuated from their house. As have all the neighbours.

My hometown has 3 MASSIVE silos for grain storage. They are the one thing you can see from any part of town... And apparently there is a fire...

Most people dont know that silo's build up a LOT of explosive gasses, like, one spark in the wrong place and the whole thing blows.

So the emergency services have evacuated up to 1500 people... which is something considering my town only has 8000 people.

Today was 40C dry heat and windy. Perfect bush fire conditions, which is bad enough, but the fire services cant get close enough to release the gas safely, nor can they safely put out the fire.

Its a fucked up situation... If the silo blows, you can bet the other two silo's will go with it, you can also bet that fires will start everywhere cause they're literally explode up and out, burning everything in its path.

If they explode, it will also impact more than you can imagine on the town's economy. With the drought already fucking us over... We dont need this too.

My only consilation is I know that my friends and family are safe for the most part for now. I can also garentee I wont be sleeping much tonight.

<lj:music>Fireworks booming off the Sydney Harbour Bridge for 2007</lj:music>

(The subject should warn you of the rant/whine ahead... sports metaphors, thats how crappy my day is going)

Okay, so, new years eve and where am I? At home, in bed, on my laptop avoiding all people, being antisocial with a scratchy throat, killer headache and achy joints and muscles. Totally par for the course.

Generally, I'm not into big nights like, NYE, large crowds tend to freak me out if I'm not with someone. Lets take last year as en example...

My sister Jacky (the one who actually realises theres a world outside our hometown, but doesnt have the cute kids... Its a tradeoff) took me to London for NYE as a Christmas present. Awesome.

We were down on The Embankment to watch the 05/06 NYE fireworks off the The Eye where there was about a billion people. It was okay... I had my sister to hold onto. I didnt even hyperventilate or anything.

The next day I went into Harrods to check it out... You know, you're in London the first time, doing the touristy thing while your sister is off shopping for herself, you have to check out Harrods right? Wrong.

There was more people in that damn store than there was down watching the fireworks. All crowded in like sardines. I was in the store maybe 10 minutes and had moved probably only 10 meters from the entrance. Yeah there were that many people.

You can see where this is going right?

Right.

It all gets to be too much. So, I'm standing in the middle of an itsy bitsy isle, sandwiched between this fat old lady who was wearing too much perfume and a bunch of Japanese tourists and I start hyperventilating. I try to make my way to the doors to get out, only no one is moving, so I cant move an inch. I'm standing there, cant breath, cant move and suddenly the screaming in my head comes out my mouth.

So if you were in Harrods about this time last year, and you remember the crazy Australian tourist who started screaming "Get me out! Let me out! I cant breath! Let me out! Out! OUT!" That was me.

Happy New Years!

Huh, not so much of a rant/whine so much as a funny-ass story that I can laugh at now. Then, not so much.

Oh, I saw Happy Feet... Cute but not what I was expecting... It has some fairly big themes that kids just wont get (like the boy who was sitting 2 chairs down from me who had to ask every other minute what was happening... and he was like, 5). It was actually kind of depressing... I hate it when people are treated badly or unfairly, for whatever reason, so this movie made me cringe a fair bit, though to be fair, it also made me laugh lots too. I dont think I'd see it again.

Oh! Fireworks! Peoples cheering for the new year!

Well everyone, I hope that 2007 finds you in health and happiness... Have a good one all!

(ETA: Livejournal obviously doesnt recognise daylight savings time... Or I have to fix it manually, in which case, whatever. Its Jan 1st, 2007. Also, I'm pretty sure that last bang was a gun, not fireworks...)

<lj:music>Skunk Anasie - Good Things Don't Always Come to You</lj:music>

So I was meandering my way through the SMH online tonight and wandered across this- A guide to my home town!. Its rediculously out of date in regards to places to stay and eat, but the history of it is accurate and interesting. To me at least. Sad it doesn't mention the Beach Volley Ball competition... Not that theres a beach there or anything... They just dump tonnes of sand on one of the streets.

The job is all finished up... I feel good, even without having the security of a new job. Then again, as Fiona Apple says, I'm good at being uncomfortable, so I cant help changing all of the time. I really am an extraordinary machine.

<lj:music>AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long</lj:music>

My pretties,

I'm here to give you pretties for your ears!

A bunch of classic Oz rock for your listening pleasure! You have no idea, how long it took me to decide what bands made the cut, nevermind which song.

This is a dialup disaster clocking in at just a tad over 90mb.

You will find the big zipped folder here at megaupload for one week! I think its a week...

Anyways, The Shoot To Thrill Playlist consists of:

Screaming Jets - 'Better' I'm still pissed the bastards broke up.

Cold Chisel - 'Khe Sanh' Cause its pub rock at its absolute best and you can bet, if you were in a pub, and this song came on, every single person in the place would be singing along.

Hoodoo Gurus - 'Come Anytime' Cause 'Miss Freelove '69' was too obvious a choice. I bet you think I'm kinky right?

Frente! - 'Bizarre Love Triangle' It was this or 'Ordinary Angels' and this is a bit more... less depressing. (Oh I'm good with the english!)

Australian Crawl - 'Reckless (Don't you be so)' Possibly the most beautiful song every writen. If you can understand the lyrics through James Raynes drawl.

Big Pig - 'Devil's Song' Was there a bigger unknown band in the 80s than Big Pig?

The Whitlams - 'You Made me Hard' Hard to pick a song that would mean something to people who arent from Oz by these guys.

You Am I - 'Heavy Heart' The best depressing break up song ever!

Hunters & Collectors - 'Where Do You Go' They have a billion songs... This isnt the best, but its classic.

INXS - 'Never Tear Us Apart' Possibly their best song ever. I just love the violins.

Boom Crash Opera - 'Dancing In The Storm' This song always picks me up... It will pull me out of a funk by the first line of the sung. Best sung out loud.

Baby Animals - 'Break My Heart' Slow and sexy and kinda depressing, but great to sing along too.

Men At Work - 'Who Can It Be Now' The obvious choice would have been 'Down Under' but everyone knows that one... This song sums up my attitude about people most of the time.

Powderfinger - 'My Kind Of Scene' If there has a bigger, better band in Oz the past ten years that aren't Powderfinger, I'm a monkey's uncle (ok, technically, my nephews nickname is Monkey, and I'm his aunt, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.)

Alex Lloyd - 'My Way Home' One of his first singles, and I'm pretty sure he's one of the most fucked up people who's ever writen a song, but it doesn't really show so much in this song.

Midnight Oils - 'King Of The Mountain' Never has a band had such an impact on, not just the Australian music scene, but also on public awareness and political issues... There's probably not a house in Oz that doesn't have at least one Midnight Oil album... Peter Garratt may or may not have sold out by joining the Labour Party, but he's still out there trying to make a difference. Go him.

The Audreys - 'Banjo & Violin' My latest obsession... This is just a sexy ass song... Sexy ass country song no less.

Paul Kelly - 'Dumb Things' I want to use 'To Her Door' only to find I dont have it (criminal!) so as is proper, this song is almost a poem about the Australian Way Of Life. (AHHAHAHAHAA ::coughs::)

AC/DC - 'Shoot To Thrill' I know, I know... AC/DC have about a bazillion songs, and any of them would have fit... But thanks to Supernatural, 'Back in Black' is less Oz Rock Anthem and more 'oh, hot car'. It came down to a fight between this one and 'You Shook Me All Night Long' I'm still not sure why this one won. Oh well.

Choir Boys - 'Run to Paradise' BABY! You were always gonna be the one! You only ever did it just for fun!

The Cat Empire - 'Days Like These' You either love them or hate them. They have a very distinct sounds for an Oz band and a stupidly loyal following cause their live shows are freaking amazing!

Ben Lee - 'Aftertaste' From a 13yo wonderkind (of percocious shit, depending on who you ask) to an accomplished singer/songwriter... The guy who was dumped by Claire Danes for Billy Crudup writes sexy.

Mia Dyson - 'Roll Me Out' Not quite and Oz legend, but she should be. She has a sexy voice that kind of vibrates right through you. She also sings about girls holding hands with girls!

Diesel - 'Never Miss Your Water' He's copped flack for so many things, but damn, the man can perform.

Leonardo's Bride - 'Even When I'm Sleeping' She sings with a lisp, and it works, for this one song. Hence, Oz's biggest one hit wonder.

So, its been roughly forever... which, is typically me.

I'm still in love with Sydney, not so much in love with my housemate or how my work has been dicking me around... Its time to do that whole, Up, Up and Away! thing again. I feel like, things are so unsettled, why not run away to the other side of the world again? It was awesome the first time!

No, really... I'm looking for another job, in Sydney and other places in the world... I'd love, LOVE to go back to NYC, or to Vancouver or Washington DC, but we'll have to wait an see... for now, whats important is having a job somewhere even if its driving me insane. Insaner?

As for my housemate, small, small world... Of all the Irish people I know in Sydney (thats about 3) he lived with one of them then stayed with 2 of them. Not even needing the full 6 Degree's baby! Of course, he chews with his mouth open, and I could probably brain him for that alone, so, I'm going to need to find a new place asap. Or at least, sometime in the new year. Who knows? Maybe I'll be looking in your neck of the woods? Unlikely, but still, Hee!

I'm kinda geeking out about it all now... But first, it would help to actually have a job and place to go to, to geek out about.

So, its been yeeears.

Here is an update in the life of me.

I've been having issues with the stupid agency that brought me here. Apparently its easy to get here, not so easy to get to where I want to go on the way home. Oh well.

I finally sorted it out that I got my own tickets... So... I leave New York on the 11th of May. *deep breath*

32 days.

It's too soon.

But I'm so excited!

I haven't seen home for a year. Haven't seen my family and friends for a year.

Its a long time between hugs.

My nephew Daniel has started school and my slacker sister hasnt sent me any photos oh how incredibly cute he is in his uniform. I'm sure he's cute, he always is.

Anyways, after leaving here, I'm in Hawaii for 13 days... A few of which will be wasted in planes, but I can survive that for 2 weeks bumming around on the beach.

Its probably going to be less bumming on the beach and more working our asses off to get around a few of the islands.

My friend Cheryl, from Sydney, currently living in Vancouver, is gonna come over and meet me in Hawaii for the 2 weeks. We're gonna hire a car, circumnavigate Maui & the Big Island... We're gonna bum on the beaches, hike though some jungles, ride horses, take a helicopter trip and explore volcanoes! How awesome is it gonna be?

Then I'm back off to Sydney on the 23rd, landing on the 24th... From Sydney to Canberra where my loving parents (or at least one loving parent) will pick me up. Man, I'm looking forward to doing nothing for a few days, basking in the love.

I've kinda sorta got my living situation sorted for when I get back to Sydney... And weirdly enough, I've already had one job offer... Yeah, it was kind of freakish, but super cool anyway. How often do you wake up and find a job offer in your email when you havent applied for anything in forever.

Here in NY Spring has hit hard. Everything is blooming and such pretty colours. Cherry blossoms, crocusses and soooooo much green! I'm still amazed at how green it is. I drive down the street and some lawns are blue with wildflowers, all the branches on the tree tips are green or coloured with blossoms.

Fun part of spring? The allergies. Ugh.

It's nice to be able to open my windows and have fresh air for a while.

Of course, the weather changes from one day to the next. Snow, rain, hot sun. All in a week.

One month left in New York.

Two weeks in Hawaii.

HOME!

Springing into Spring

So we had the first day of spring just a few days ago...

The weather is bright and sunny and still freezing bloody cold!!!

The trees have the first blush of buds and leaves on them, which always makes me a little giddy.

I was sitting in the car with the windows down in the sun today... It was lovely, but then the wind picked up and there was a billion little bugs around so it started sucking.

Still though... Spring!!

I only have about 7 weeks of work left (I'm not counting much, really!) then I'm thinking a week or 2 in Hawaii will be more than enough for me then I'm going home!!

Man, time has gone by so fast... Theres so many people I'm going to miss... I'll be back one day! For a holiday at the very least...

My plan is currently thus- A year at home, in Sydney... I put the kabosh on Canberra, cause well, its Canberra... And Coota was never an option for more than like, a week... So back to Sydney with me. For a year... Then I'm thinking I'd like to try Canada for a year... Probably Vancouver cause its slightly milder weather than anywhere else. And I've been in NY for a year now... this part of the world has lost some of its shine :-) Not all of it, but a little.

Besides, my friend CherylSav ( who loves me enough to come to Hawaii with me) is there now, and if I get bad reports from her I can go somewhere else... Like Mexico!

I'm so sick of being sick its making me sick!!

Well, not really, but it seems like it!

First, I have a weeks vacation while the family were in Jamaica... I could have done awesomely cool things right? Wrong, instead I was home, sick, with a flu like snot encrusted sickness.

Then I spend, like, 4 days recovering only to get a sinus infection. Another week long snot encrusted illness.

You can NOT believe how over snot I am. If I never see snot again, or cough up phlegm again, it will be too soon.

I even went to the doctor!

5 hours & $US250 later I have two types of antibiotics that are rather like something a horse might be able to swallow. Generally I hate taking antibiotics, our bodies make natural antibodies for this kind of thing, but I'm at the point where I'd eat moldy bread if someone told me it was penicillin.

Not to mention the fact I've been in bed for like, 5 days or something stupid.

But I am on the mend and I feel the need to do something constructive. So this morning I get up and I clean up my pigsty of a room... And it occures to me that in the next week or two I need to start packing shit up to ship it home so that it gets home the same time I do...

How weird is that?

I had a minor moment of freaking out, then I nearly cried cause I'm going to miss everyone so frigging much! I'm out of NY in about 2 months exactly... 8 weeks... I'm going to travel a little first, but I wont be here in NY with my family and friends...

Right now though I'm ignoring all things reality based and am contemplating making a bunch of playlists on my ipod for various occassions...

So today was a momentous kind of day... The kind of day where you do $450+ worth of shopping and only pay $30. Huzzah! Then you have to eventually get everything home again... Not so huzzah. I brought a toiletries bag, a bunch of awesome photo frames, a little leather covered chest annnnd... oh, craft stuff for Simon. The store is closing down and the guy who was ringing up my purchases wasnt even looking at the tags, he was guessing then taking 70% off the guessed prices... He was cute too! Double bonus. I also snagged some wool that I'm sending over to Surya so she can go on a knitting frenzy for me :) The postage will probably cost more than the yarn did.

Westchester had a huge storm the other night... Trees down and power cut all over the county. For once we were the lucky ones and didnt lose any power. But Family friends did, so we've had house guests for 3 days while theyre waiting for the power to come back on. Hopefully they'll get their power back on tonight.

I went to my comic store to pick up the new arrivals, only they had lost their power too, the whol.e block was without power... Major stuff for a block on the main street of stripmalls in Westchester It was open, but i couldnt see shit so I gave up and told them I'd be back. He offered me a torch and I think he was genuinely offended when I laughed at him.

I met up with Sarah from my Spanish class for dinner tonight. That was nice, I havent seen her since a few weeks before xmas. We ate, we ate a lot and were going to see a movie, but decided to do it next week instead. We're so old. I did however manage to pick up a book as recommended by the fantabulous Surya and 2 cds. Damien Rice, O (of which I have all the songs already) and Ryan Adams, 29 which is his new one.

I'm going into the city on Sunday night to see a show... My first one! Seems wrong cause I've been here forever, but oh well. I dont know what its called or where its at... Fun huh? My friend Leah is a lighting personage for the production so she got me two free tickets and I'm dragging Sus in for the evening. We're going to have dinner somewhere near the theater (when I find out where it is) then we're going to catch the show... Should be fun fun fun.

So I made it back... Which in itself is a mighty feat considering I almost didnt get there in the first place. More on that later... This is one of those posts where I promise a proper post later. (Stealing from the Sus) I will make a quick list of the high points...

* Went to Germany

* Went to London

* Brought Dr Who boxset and 7000 kilos of chocolate

* Went back to Germany for a day

* Came back to New York

Fun, huh?

I also took a bazillion photos, which will be showed with the next proper post. I sent a few postcards, mostly to family back home in Oz...

Thats pretty much it. I'm sooo exciting!

Hope you all had excellent holidays... Hope the new year will bring you all fun and games!

Nat

Horray!

I am all packed up, the only thing I have to do is pick up my jacket from the dry cleaners and then get myself to the airport.

This doesnt sound too difficult now does it? Ha!

Bastard transport workers are all striking!!

It should be ok though, worst comes to worst, I'll hijack someone. Fun times.

I'm so damn excited!! Less than 24 hours and I'm on a flight to the other side of the woooorld!

Aggaaain!!

Hee!

Anyways, if I dont talk to you before I take off, I hope you all have a marvelous holiday time and a rediculously drunken new years! Horray for alcohol!!

Love and kisses from Nat in 2005...

So the stike talks are still happening... Little bitches! Dont they know I have a plane to catch on Wednesday? Dont they realise that I have places to go?!?

Grrr

In other news, I made my Ma proud cause I spent an hour and a half sewing my own jumper rather than thinking about making someone else do it. I'm proud.

I still haven't done my washing. Which could be a problem cause the washing machine people are coming tomorrow to fix it. They better not make it un-useable, if they even mention it I'm going to go kung-fu on their asses.

    <lj:music>Weezer - Say It Ain't So</lj:music>

It's been a weirdly wonderful day. I was up early, for me anyways, and I went and did a little unneccessary shopping. Half of which I have to take back, but oh well.

I had a BRILLIANT hair day, gotta love that! I was all curls and very little fuzz, nice!

Had a nice afternoon of work with Simon and his playdate, Matthew behaving wonderfully. Simon & I went out for dinner to the diner...

Bets is off tomorrow to go to a spa for a few days (lucky!) with Laura so theres a few full on days coming up... I really have it easy in the working hours department... Not so much on monday & tuesday where I have to be up at 7am to get Simon ready for school... It possibly will kill me. If it does, know that I love you all!

Bets is back on Tuesday arvo and we will be having a big family dinner... With me being over in Germany for the holidays, I'll miss out on both Bets' birthday & experiencing Channukah... Which would have been awesome, but I doubt there will be many more opportunities for me to visit Germany. So anyways, dinner & a birthday present... Plus one Channukah pressy for Simon (I've already given him one, cause I couldnt wait! It was Magnetix).

Then I have Wed off so I'll be sleeping in to recover a little, then I'll probably get the train into Grand Central Station mid afternoon to make it out to JFK by 4.

I got a bit of packing done today (Jacky better appreciate what I'm suffering though here for her cause I had to pack around all her crap.) Then I discovered that I had a cord I could attach to my iPod adaptor. This is a brillant thing cause the battery life on the new beastie isnt great.

So thats about all thats happening in my life. Exciting huh? I have a whole bunch of washing to do before I leave, but its not so exciting that I'll blog about it in detail. Most people know the generalities of separating whites from darks.

Kisses!

Nat

Ground Rules: The first player of this "game" starts with the topic "5 weird habits of yours" and people who get tagged need to write an LJ entry about their 5 quirky habits as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 5 people to be tagged and list their names.

* When I get tired, my face gets itchy all over and I rub it like crazy.

* When eating food with my fingers I can not put my whole hand in... I only use 2 fingers.

* When I read, I always have a funny look on my face, usually a big dumb grin.

* I have to put both socks on before I put my shoes on. I can not do one sock one shoe then the other sock and other shoe. This stems from a pathalogical fear that if I wear one shoe for longer than the other, one foot will become noticably different in size. Its the same in that I always dress from the right side and take off from the right side first.

* I can not stand to have hot and cold things on the same plate. I will eat one then the other. but never at the same time.

So there you have it, bizarre, but thats me. My whole life people have told me I'm weird... I tag BostonBWY, filmobsessed137, Onastick, MrSchimpf & My sister Jacky :-)

Five days until I jet on over the Germany to spend the holidays with my sister Jacky... Not sure exactly whats planned, but I know there will be Roast Pork with crackle for xmas. Horray! Living with a Jewish family, pig is not generally on the list of foods served.

My Spanish class is finished and I was hoping to get enrolled in next semesters classes before I went away, but I'm not sure I'll get it done... I may have to split it in 2, though in the long run, thats more expensive. *sigh* I hate having to think for myself, wheres my Mum when I need her?

Wrote out a bunch of xmas cards today... Mostly to family though there were a few to friends... Theres so many more people I should have writen them too, but I wanted to send them to people at home in Oz more than peoples here... Simply cause I'm not seeing them in forever... where as people here... I'll see them sooner :)

I've also sent some xmas gifts, nothing fancy... I've always loved shopping for xmas gifts, shitty is this year I also have to think of postage costs. Pfftt. I also have other sitting here in my room waiting. I wont send Daniel's without sending Michael's cause thats just mean... Of course, I wouldnt be having problems trying to find him anything if my sister werent a PITA who wont tell me what he likes. I should send him something gross and horrible to clean up, that would teach the anal freak (yes, I'm talking to you Rebecca!).

Okay my feathered friends, I shall talk to you all laters!

Nat
